*This is a work of fiction. The story is made up and has not actually happened to the people it is based on.

    “Well, Nick just cancelled, too.”

Link pulled the phone away from his ear and set it on the counter. His voice was tinged with disappointment, though he tried to hide it. Rhett had known his friend for far too long not to notice.

“I dunno, Link, do you still want to do this? I don’t think this trip will be a good idea with just the two of us.”

Since moving to Los Angeles, both of them had taken up hiking, although it was more of Link’s thing. For the last two months they had been planning their first backpacking trip through the San Gabriel Mountains outside of LA. Originally, four of their friends were to go with them, but within the last week they all cancelled. One by one, each of them had some sort of family emergency or pressing business matter to attend to.

“Well, it’s too late to ask anyone else to go,” said Link, visibly downhearted. “We’re supposed to leave tomorrow. There’s no time for anyone to get equipment and supplies.”

Link leaned back against the cobalt colored fridge in their studio’s small kitchenette. He stared intently into his mug of coffee and had begun to absentmindedly tap his finger on it. Rhett stood on the other side of the breakfast bar which had separated the kitchenette from the lounge. He faced Link; his hands firmly planted on the bar as he leaned his tall frame over it.

It had been almost a month since the most recent season of Good Mythical Morning had ended. Even with the season being over, they were still overwhelmingly busy with new projects they had in the works. Meetings with fellow Youtubers, advertising firms, and various speaking engagements had kept them in constant work mode.

The next week and a half would be different. They needed time to recuperate from their hectic schedule before the new season of “GMM” started up in two weeks. The first four days of their vacation was going to be the backpacking trip; the last six days they would each go their own way to have some quality vacation time with their own families. Being his first backpacking trip, Link was particularly looking forward to it.

The studio was unnaturally quiet. The normal laughter and bustle of the Rhett and Link, Inc. crew felt strangely absent. Each had left earlier that day for their own well-earned downtime. Both Rhett and Link had some last minute paperwork and few phone calls to make before they could take leave of the office. The silence felt compounded as the evening began to grow darker. Rhett’s mind wandered back to the silence of their former basement studio in North Carolina. It was just the two of them then, too. Though not an overly sentimental person by nature, he was still touched by how far he had come with his best friend. He hated seeing the disappointment on Link’s face.

“Okay, man. Let’s go ahead with this trip.”

“Really?” Link said, startled out of his stupor.

“Yeah, there’s no telling when we’ll get another chance to do this. Besides, we already picked up all the stuff. There’s no sense in all this equipment just sitting around the house.”

Rhett still had some reservations considering they were both inexperienced, but the thought of the two of them adventuring in the woods made him nostalgic for their childhood back in North Carolina.

Link’s renewed excitement made the rest of the day’s work pass quickly. Within the hour they had finished their work and were at their respective homes making last minute preparations for the next day.
I love fiction, but I've never attempted to write it. The extent of my writing experience is research and analysis papers, so I'm sorry if that style bleeds into this.

This is the opening scene of a short story I'm working on. I (if you can't tell by my other works) love Rhett and Link. I find their personalities and background fascinating. I thought that writing a fanfic about them would be a simple way for me to dive into this unfamiliar writing style.

I'll post the entire story when I finish writing and editing it. I hope ya'll enjoy this sneak peek at it anyway.
